International Multidisciplinary Symposium SOUNDS, SONGS AND POLITICS

What the research of song lyrics, bi- and multilingual songs, as well as song translations, can tell us about the power relations on a continuum between the coexistence and conflict in interhuman relations? How musical activities of traditional minorities, migrants, refugees, and diasporas correspond to transculturation, transnationality and other related scholarly concepts and processes? Which new directions in thinking, practising, and imagining sound’s and music’s capacities in the political arena, with particular focus on affect, body and senses, mark our time – the time of “crisis of political agency”?

Welcome to our annual symposium, initiated back in 2011, which this time puts to the forefront the intricate connections within a triangle made of sound, song, and politics. Some thirty presenters from ten countries address the above and several other questions in their papers and organized panels. The three thematic foci are: Lingual intertwinings in songs as expressions of coexistence and conflicts, Music and transcultural identifications, and Music, politics, and affect.
