IN JULY AND AUGUST, FRIDAYS ARE FOR JAZZ!
On Friday, July 1st, 2022, we are starting the International concert cycle JAZZ STAGE on Gornji trg in Ljubljana. All Fridays in July and August will see the Old Ljubljana Town filled with an attractive and diverse jazz programme.
This summer, lovers of this exciting and colourful music genre are in for a treat with concerts by ten outstanding jazz ensembles varying from well-established jazz players to talented young musicians.
The season will be opened by the excellent Ljubljana Jazz Octet, headed by pianist Marko Petrušič, presenting music from their first CD Rainy day blues (2021), and the new album launching soon. Following that is an explosive concert by the international ensemble Balkalito Project (Austria, Brazil, Serbia, North Macedonia) on July 8th, who defying definition sails effortlessly between ethno-jazz and classical music.
On July 15th, we are in for a double bill, starting with this year’s TEMSIG winners J. J. A. jazz trio under the mentorship of Braco J. Doblekar with a prodigious eleven-year-old on piano, and followed by a brand-new trio of outstanding jazz players – Lenart De Bock on saxophone, Nikola Matošić on double bass and Elvis Hi-Man on drums.
In homage to Plečnik Year 2022, the renowned artist Lado Jakša has prepared an intriguing and poetic multimedia performance Plečnik’s Thought that you can catch on 22nd July at the Fountain of Hercules. The same evening will see a concert by the exceptionally talented young Jakomini Jazz Trio from Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, introducing their first album.
The last Friday in July, the 29th, come to Stari trg in front of ŠKUC, where the wonderfully imaginative ensemble birds of unknown will serve us a beautiful sound cocktail of jazz, avant-garde, ethno and soul.
On August 5th, the celebrated jazz musician Ratko Zjaca, whose work earned him the 2019 outstanding authorship and artistic creation award by the Croatian Composers’ Society, returns to JAZZ STAGE in the company of Slovenia’s most distinguished young vibraphonist, a Berklee College of Music summa cum laude graduate Vid Jamnik.
On August 12th, we are hosting one of the most successful Brazilian drummers, Igor Willcox along with his world-famous quartet. On Friday, August 19th, we are joined by Swingatan Quintet, a long-term project of internationally renowned Slovenian jazz players exploring a wealth of different music genres from gypsy jazz, swing and bossa nova to classical etudes.
JAZZ STAGE comes alive again by the Fountain of Hercules from August 25th to August 27th during the Nights in Old Ljubljana Town International Festival. The programme is coming soon.
