From ornament to expression – Musical dialogue between Italy and England in the 17th and 18th centuries
SUNDAY MUSIC MATINEES
Mateja Bajt, flute
Izidor Erazem Grafenauer, lute, theorbo
The diverse musical matinees at the SSG aim to offer a variety of genres and impressions, and the February concert will be dedicated to early music, more specifically to the musical dialogue between Italy and England in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The protagonists of the matinee will be renowned Slovenian musicians Mateja Bajt and Izidor Erazem Grafenauer, who are dedicated to researching and performing early music. With their rich international experience and deep interest in historical sources, they will take the audience on a live and authentic journey through Baroque sound, in this case with compositions by Corelli, Kapsberger, Mealli, Geminiani, and Tartini. Most of the composers mentioned above come from Italy, but their works are marked by an international spirit – especially with connections to England, where Italian musicians brought their style and expression. The program thus represents a journey from the early Baroque to the gallant sophistication of the 18th century, in which ornamentation is not merely decoration, but a vehicle for meaning and emotion. Through the colorful harmony of various recorders, theorbo, and lute, the performers bring to life the legacy of Baroque masters, whose works were originally written mostly for violin and basso continuo.
