HAEZZ TRIO (Austria, Czechia)
Martin Eberle, trumpet
Stepan Flagar, tenor saxophone
Tobias Vedovelli, double bass
“Could this be the new star trio of Austrian jazz?” — this is how Austrian music critic Andreas Felber recently described Haezz Trio.
The trio is made up of prominent jazz musicians who, through numerous artistic encounters and collaborations — including with the Vorarlberg Jazz Orchestra, Ralph Mothwurf Orchestra, Kuhle Wampe, onQ, and Shake Stew — developed a growing desire to create a unique ensemble based on sonic symbiosis, without relying on the harmonic and rhythmic instruments commonly used in such settings.
The maturity and cohesion of the compositions presented on the trio’s debut album, Haezz (2024), reveal seasoned musicians with a clearly defined jazz identity, free from any sense of mere technical display. Warm, intimately voiced chorale elements intertwine with contrapuntal lines of lyrical intensity. The polyphonic influence of cool jazz meets complex rhythmic sophistication and Central European melodic sensibilities. The ever-present virtuosity serves purely as a means to an end in this entirely acoustic, harmonically rich, handcrafted chamber jazz.
