ORGAN CYCLE: Barbara in Ulrich Theissen Pibernik

Barbara and Ulrich Theissen Pibernik, a well-rehearsed organ duo, will perform in the Chapel of the St. Stanislaus Institute in Šentvid, just outside Ljubljana. They divide their time between Slovenia, Austria, and Germany, united by their passion for music and the organ. Barbara graduated with honors and completed her postgraduate studies in organ at the Ljubljana Academy of Music. She now teaches organ at music schools in Kranj and Jesenice. Ulrich is a professor of Slavic studies at the University of Salzburg, and he also works as a church musician, organist, concert organizer in Bamberg, and an organ expert.

Their concert, titled Dvojna fantazija (Double Fantasy) will feature both a four-handed organ performance and solo pieces. They will perform works by several lesser-known composers, including Wolfram Rehfeldt, Ada Wammes, Gustaf Adolf Mankell, Horatio William Parker, and Josef Rheinberger, as well as a piece by Slovenian composer Pavle Dolenc titled Three Paraphrases on Zdravljica by Stanko Premrl.

“Playing the organ is an expression of will filled with a vision of eternity,” wrote French composer and organist Charles-Marie Widor. As W. A. Mozart also stated, the organ is the king of instruments. This instrument offers the performer endless interpretive possibilities while requiring a well-rounded and versatile musical personality.

To promote and popularize organ music, Radio Slovenia’s Ars program and Imago Sloveniae are organizing its fourth organ concert cycle, titled Obiski kraljice v živo (Visits of the Queen). Renowned domestic and international organists are featured, performing selected programs on some of the finest Slovenian organs. This year, the cycle invites four organists: two from Slovenia and two from abroad. Each of them is active as both liturgical and concert organists in their respective countries, and some are also composers, singers, improvisers, organ experts, and professors.
