The Ljubljana Jazz Octet is a group of musicians who are actively involved in the jazz scene of Slovenia’s capital. The ensemble was formed in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when academic pianist Marko Petrušič began composing and arranging music for a five-part horn and reed section. His compositions reflect stories and experiences from that challenging period. The arrangements incorporate classical jazz techniques such as four-way close voicing with the baritone saxophone in octaves, spread voicings, linear writing, and unison passages. Sonically, the octet leans toward swing and bebop traditions. One of their most notable performances was part of the Jazz Tuesdays concert series at Cankarjev dom. However, they are best known for their regular appearances on the streets of Ljubljana — a characteristic that inspired their name.
To date, the Ljubljana Jazz Octet has released two albums: Rainy Day Blues and Walk Through the Neighbourhood. A third studio album is planned for recording and release in the fall of this year.
