Kelly-Marie Murphy (1964), Give Me Phoenix Wings To Fly

In this programme, the accio piano trio explores contrasting atmospheres and takes us on a journey through more than 200 years of musical history. Starting with the origins of the genre, we hear one of Joseph Haydn’s early piano trios – while still rooted in Baroque tradition, it surprises with intense emotion and a furious, almost fiery finale.

Fire is an essential idea in Kelly-Marie Murphy’s work Give Me Phoenix Wings to Fly. In three continuous movements, roughly symbolizing fire, devastation (embers), and renewal, the Canadian composer creates a powerful sonic image of the mythical Phoenix’s life cycle.

The programme concludes with Franz Schubert’s famous Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major, which opens new perspectives on the emotional interplay of light and darkness. This epic work of exceptional beauty takes the listener on an emotional rollercoaster – from the innocent joy to profound romanticism, at times turning to profound melancholy. Particularly in the funeral-like second movement, it seems as if Schubert already sensed that it would be one of his final compositions.

In 2013, during their studies at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, three young Austrian musicians with a shared passion for chamber music founded the accio piano trio: Christina Scheicher (piano), Clemens Böck (violin), and Anne Sophie Keckeis (cello). Since then, they have performed regularly across Austria, Europe, and beyond, and have received several awards at national and international competitions.

The ensemble began their studies at the Sándor Végh Institute of the Mozarteum University, working with violinist Wolfgang Redik (Vienna Piano Trio) and pianist Tünde Kurucz. After a brief intermezzo with alternating cellists, the trio reunited in its original formation in 2018 to pursue a master’s degree in chamber music at the HMDK Stuttgart (Germany). Under the guidance of violinist Martin Funda and pianist Florian Wiek, they completed their degree in 2023 with unanimous distinction.

Since 2014, the accio piano trio has been supported by the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation – Live Music Now, and was selected twice by the Austrian national competition Musica Juventutis, making their debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus in 2015. Further distinctions include 2nd Prize at the 9th International Johannes Brahms Chamber Music Competition in Gdańsk, Poland (2022), 1st Prize at the Carl-Wendling Chamber Music Competition in Stuttgart (2023), and 3rd Prize at the 30th International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria (2024).

Numerous concert tours have led the ensemble not only throughout Austria but also to Germany (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich), Switzerland, Italy (Festival Portogruaro, Festival Badia Musica), France, England (Milton Court, Conway Hall), Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Türkiye (Istanbul, Mersin Festival), Malta, Georgia (Caucasus), China (Shenzhen Concert Hall), and Senegal. Many of these international engagements were made possible through collaborations with Austrian Cultural Forums abroad.

Among approximately 200 public performances to date, several stand out: their 2016 concert at Goldegg Castle (Austria), broadcast by national radio Österreich 1, featured the world premiere of a commissioned work by composer Jakob Gruchmann; the admission to the program of concert promoter Jeunesse for the seasons 2018/19 and 2024/25; and their 2021 debut at the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg, performing alongside Rolando Villazón as presenter and vocalist.

In the current 2024/25 season, the trio is engaged in close collaboration with the International Mozarteum Foundation as a Featured Artist in the educational program Mozart’s World. Additionally, the accio piano trio was selected as one of five classical ensembles for the New Austrian Sound of Music (NASOM) program, sponsored by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA), enabling them to represent Austria as cultural ambassadors worldwide for the 2025/26 seasons.

The ensemble’s repertoire centers on the masterworks of Viennese Classicism, while also embracing rarely performed works, particularly by women composers, and contemporary pieces by emerging Austrian composers.
