Harmonies Beyond Time is a series of concerts taking place in various locations across Slovenia, offering audiences a unique musical journey through the centuries. Focusing on the solo violin, the programme presents rarely performed works by well-known composers from the 17th century to the present day. Harmonies Beyond Time marks the beginning of the Slovenian overture to the international Harmonies Beyond Time project, which will later be performed in Belgium and England. This is a unique opportunity to hear exceptional works that are less often included in regular concert programmes, but which nevertheless have an important place in music history.

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was one of the most innovative composers of his time. His use of scordatura – a special tuning of the violin that allows for more unusual chords and sound effects – was a revolution. Compositions such as the Rosenkavalier Sonatas are not only technically demanding, but also deeply expressive. Biber’s music is still important today, opening up new avenues in the interpretation of Baroque violin music.

The music of Peter Kopač takes us into a world of vast soundscapes. His compositions have been described as cosmic and spherical, as they interweave subtle melodies and rich harmonies. Kopač’s works are at once introspective and universal, often seeming like a journey through soundscapes that explore the boundaries of space and time.

Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most revered composers of his time, although today he often remains in the shadow of his friend Johann Sebastian Bach. The Twelve Fantasies for solo violin are a wonderful example of his ability to combine different musical styles, from Italian virtuosity to French elegance. These fantasias allow the violinist to show both technical skill and artistic feeling, and they remain popular with performers today.

Eugène Ysaÿe was a Belgian violinist and composer, considered one of the founders of the modern violin school. His sonatas for solo violin are technically demanding, but at the same time deeply personal. Each of the sonatas is dedicated to a different violinist, giving each sonata a unique character. Ysaÿe’s music demands of the performer not only superb technical skill, but also the ability to delve into rich emotional content.

Aram Khachaturian, an Armenian composer, has combined influences from the Romantic tradition and Armenian folk music in his Sonata-monologue for solo violin. His music is full of expressive melodies and strong rhythmic elements that create intense emotional tension. Khachaturian’s works are popular both for their lyricism and for the rich folk influences they bring to classical music.

Sergei Prokofiev is one of the most important Russian composers of the 20th century. His Sonata for Solo Violin in D major is an intriguing blend of simple form and complex musical ideas. It was written as a teaching piece for young violinists, but it contains the rich sonic imagination and playful melodies that are characteristic of Prokofiev. The piece brings a fresh and different approach to the violin repertoire.
