International Symposium: ROMANI AND SINTI MUSICIANS BETWEEN THE STATE, MARKET AND SOCIETY

The international interdisciplinary symposium is a part of the Nights in Ljubljana Old Town International Festival and, like every year, scholarly presentations and discussions are beautifully complemented by thematically related concert performances on several open-air stages.

This symposium is a part of the research project Romani Musicians in Slovenia: Social Status, Cultural Practices, and Interactions (J6-50204) and brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines to share their perspectives on specific aspects of Romani and Sinti musicianship world-wide. Individual papers, panels, round tables, and film projections also offer insights into musical ideas and practices of other related groups, such as Ashkalis and (Balkan) Egyptians. The symposium provides a rare opportunity for learning about these musicians and their interactions in diverse regions and time periods, performing diverse genres and repertoires for their audiences. At the same time, it also provides a valuable insight into the current state of research, with a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches.

The symposium is open to the general public.
