West Wind Blow From Your Prairie Nest (2024) is the fifth album by singer and musician Katja Šulc, who this time draws inspiration from the culture and poetry of North American indigenous people. It includes original settings of poems by prominent indigenous poets – Pauline Johnson (Mohawk), Laura Tohe (Diné), Joy Harjo (Muscogee), Zitkála-Šá (Dakota), Peter Pitchlynn (Choctaw), Jane Johnston Schoolcraft (Ojibwa) – and reworkings of existing indigenous poems. Genre-wise, it ranges between contemporary folk and Americana, conveying precious indigenous beliefs, testimonies and values through a blend of tradition and modernity.
The musician researched the project during an artist residency at the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico, as a CEC ArtsLink International Fellow. The album will be released during the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (UNESCO, 2022-2032), which draws attention to their endangerment.
