The Ljubljana jazz octet was formed when academic pianist Marko Petrušič began writing compositions and arrangements for a quintet of woodwinds and brass during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The compositions address events that unfolded during this challenging period. The arrangements employ classic arranging techniques such as ‘four way close’ with the baritone saxophone in octaves, ‘spreads’, linear arranging, etc. In their expression, the octet most closely aligns with swing and bebop. The ensemble’s second album maintains the tradition of swing but is enhanced with original arrangements for a 5-member brass section and explores the sound that such a large ensemble can produce.
The concert is part of the broader clebration of UNESCO’s International Jazz Day.
