Even at a young age, exceptional composer and trumpeter Maj Kavšek, currently of the Jazz Department at the Berlin University of the Arts, has consistently ranked high in both classical and jazz music competitions. His genre versatility has only developed and grown since. He deepened his understanding of jazz techniques under the mentorship of world-renowned masters such as Reggie Moore, Greg Cohen, David Friedman, and others. He has frequently performed as a soloist with the Big Band RTV Slovenia and regularly appears with his projects on both the Ljubljana and international music scenes.
The members of this innovative international quintet first met at the renowned Berlin Jazz Institute. They created their own musical language blending influences from classical, folk, electronic, and contemporary music in the context of jazz and improvised music. Their debut album coming out this year is titled “Galaterna.” This word is fictional yet familiar, which is itself a reflection of the uniqueness of the musical creation it titles – music that, in its uniqueness, maintains a connection to already known traditions. The album, which is a production, compositional, and arrangement work by Maj Kavšek, combines innovation with deep respect for traditions and draws inspiration from diverse sources, from traditional jazz melodies to open harmonies and textures. With this work, Maj pays homage to the artists who have significantly influenced his musical expression.
