The Matosinhos String Quartet was formed at the initiative of the Portuguese city of Matosinhos, which assembled the best Portuguese string players into an elite ensemble to serve as the resident city quartet. The quartet has achieved high rankings in international competitions receiving various prizes and accolades (RDP Young Musicians Award, Alcobaça, Prémio Jovens Músicos), including being named ECHO (European Concert Hall Organisation) Rising Stars.
Despite its relatively young age, the quartet has already established itself as the leading Portuguese chamber ensemble, regularly performing at all major festivals and concert venues in Europe (Barbican in London, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Vienna’s Musikverein, philharmonics in Hamburg and Cologne, Konzerthaus in Dortmund). The core of their repertoire is dedicated to Portuguese music, including lesser-known works for string quartets. They also enrich their programs with compositions by contemporary composers, for example, the Concerto for String Quartet by António Pinho, which they premiered with the Oporto National Orchestra at Casa da Música. In line with their mission to enrich the European treasury of contemporary music, they have commissioned works for their album ‘Raízes’ (2023) from Portuguese composers of the new generation.
