Sonora Junior Sax is an exceptional orchestra formed by young saxophonists aged 10 to 23 years. It features gifted students and graduates of Italian conservatories, whose dedication and love for music captivate audiences both domestically and internationally. The ensemble’s unique feature is its distinctive instrumentation – an orchestra composed exclusively of saxophones, which creates a special, homogeneous, and recognizable sound that delights both listeners and the professional public. Founded in 2012, the orchestra quickly established itself as an outstanding musical ensemble known for its high-performance quality and its notably eclectic and fresh repertoire. At their concerts, audiences experience a wide range of genres – from classical works to popular arrangements enriched with humor, playfulness, and technical virtuosity. The orchestra’s artistic vision is guided by esteemed Italian mentors: Domenico Luciano, Luigi Cioffi, Angela Colucci, Nicholas De Giacomo, and Adolfo Alberto Rocco. These experienced and dedicated music educators nurture the professional growth of young musicians and foster an encouraging and creative environment within the ensemble.
Sonora Junior Sax is part of Italy’s national music movement System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras and Choirs in Italy inspired by the renowned Venezuelan El Sistema. Its main goal is to provide free musical education and to motivate young people towards personal development, social integration, and artistic expression. The ensemble offers young musicians a space for creative expression, responsibility-building, team spirit, and cultural and artistic maturity.
The ensemble has performed at numerous prominent venues, including the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the Capodimonte Museum, the San Giovanni Church in Naples, the Benedictine Monastery Certosa di Padula, the Serino Sax Festival, among others. Internationally, they have also appeared on the prestigious stage of the Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna. This year (2025), they will make their debut concert tour around Slovenia.
