The Bremen Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1980 by noted German conductor, composer, pianist, oboist, and organist Heiner Buhlmann and a small circle of young musicians at the Bremen Music School. It is the main and only orchestra of its type Bremen and therefore boasts some of the best young classical musicians, who infuse their performances with exquisite musical expression, attention to detail, and profound emotional musicality. The young age of the orchestra members (aged between 14 and 22) adds an unparalleled youthful vigour to the performance, which must be experienced to be believed.
Each summer, the orchestra goes on an annual international tour, which repeatedly enthuses audiences across Europe.
Conductor Martin Lentz, who has been leading the orchestra since 2012, began his conducting career very early. He took over the direction of the Youth Chamber Orchestra at the Music and Art School Jena during his fourth semester at the “Franz Liszt” Academy of Music in Weimar. Shortly thereafter, he also became the deputy director there. This was followed by the establishment of the Thuringian Regional Association of Jeunesses Musicales Germany, where he frequently appears as a guest lecturer on various subjects. Since 2005, he has been a regular advisor for the music education program in the Palestinian territories under Israeli occupation, particularly in Ramallah. His attachment to new music is reflected in a number of premieres and world premieres of Siegfried Müller, Concertino for Piano and Small Orchestra (UA), Thilo Jaques, “Schwarz / Weiß” (UA), Matti Murto, Violin Concerto (DEA), E. Rautavaara “The True And The False Unicorn” ( DEA). With the Bremen Youth Symphony Orchestra he conducted the world premiere of Meran Shakeri “Seit er im Grabe liegt”.
