The Montreal Youth Symphony Orchestra is a distinguished Canadian youth orchestra based in Quebec, dedicated to providing talented young musicians with exceptional musical training and valuable experience performing in large symphonic ensembles. This year, the orchestra celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding, and for the past forty years it has been led by the renowned conductor Louis Lavigueur. The orchestra’s primary mission is to help young musicians refine their artistry through the performance of demanding symphonic repertoire — from classical masters such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gustav Mahler to monumental vocal-instrumental works such as Verdi’s Requiem. Many former members have gone on to successful professional careers, particularly with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain, and Les Violons du Roy, as well as with orchestras throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Others have distinguished themselves as soloists and chamber musicians. According to the orchestra’s estimates, it has contributed to the development of approximately 2,500 professional musicians since its establishment.  Each season, in addition to a number of special concerts presented in collaboration with guest choirs and soloists, the orchestra performs three major concert series. Since its founding, it has appeared in more than 400 concerts. Orchestra members have also had the opportunity to showcase their talent internationally through major tours across Canada, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Throughout its history, the ensemble has been led by three music directors: Jacques Clément, Mario Duschenes, and Louis Lavigueur. Through his artistic vision and pedagogical approach, Louis Lavigueur has left an indelible mark on the orchestra and helped shape it into one of Canada’s leading youth ensembles.
