Hail to the spring – GREGORČKI

You are invited to the traditional children’s event “Hail to the spring – Gregorčki”, which is being prepared for the twentieth year in a row by the Institute for the Revival of the Cultural Image of the Old Town. This year, the event will take place on Wednesday, March 11, between 5 pm and 8 pm at Gradaščica, on Eipprova ulica in Ljubljana.

“Hail to the spring – Gregorčki” is an event that commemorates the old custom in Ljubljana, when craftsmen lowered wooden clogs with burning candles on the water and were rejoicing that with the arrival of spring they will no longer need lights at work. According to the old Julian calendar, spring begins on St. Gregory’s Day. On the eve of St. Gregory, children release on Gradaščica in Trnovo variously shaped boats made of paper or wood, into which they place candles. These floating lights are called “St. Gregory’s boats” or “Gregorčki”. Numerous torches and garden fires on the banks of the Gradaščica create an even more fairytale atmosphere.

Before the event, we invite you to a free children’s art workshop for making Gregorčki, which will take place on Wednesday, 11.3. at 5 pm in the Botanical Garden of the University of Ljubljana.
