INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY

This year, on the occasion of the International Jazz Day, which is celebrated every year on April 30, Jazz Ravne, the Carinthian Philatelic Society with designer Borut Bončina and painter Stojan Brezočnik present a postage stamp that focuses on jazz music. It is a project that goes beyond the current activities of philatelic societies, as the stamp with the logo of the International Jazz Day has not been found anywhere in the world so far. In America, however, such editions exist, while not elsewhere. So far, only one has been published in Slovenia, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Ljubljana Jazz Festival.

However, the postage stamp represents only a part of the jazz-colored philatelic set, under which the designers also placed a postcard, an envelope, an imprint on the envelope and a postage stamp. The graphics used for the postage stamp, which also includes the Jazz Raven logo and International Jazz Day, show strings falling from the sky with stylized people standing under them, while the imprint on the envelope maintains a connection to the music simply because of its shape and material used. Instead of a classic background, the motif is etched on a CD and unites musicians and listeners.

While the postage stamp will be issued in a limited edition of a thousand copies, the postcards can be printed, because the central idea is that the performers within the Jazz Ravne subscription cycle and the Slovenian Jazz Festival would sign them, thus providing a rarity, as many musicians in specific performances are performed only a few times, often in Ravne na Koroškem, which have become one of the most important jazz centers in this part of Europe in the last decade.

The result of the philatelic set will be in the exhibition space of the Carinthian Central Library dr. Franc Sušnik, Na gradu 1, Ravne na Koroškem, on Monday, April 29, 2019, at 6 p.m. The whole event is rounded off by a concert by Filip Dihpol (alto horn) and Oskar Kolar (bass), as well as a thematic exhibition with graphics by Stojan Brezočnik and photographs by Nika Hölcl Praper. On the International Jazz Day, on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, the appropriate postmark will be available at the Ravne na Koroškem post office.
