Waidhofen an der Ybbs (Waidhofen along the Ybbs River) has a long orchestral tradition, reaching back to 19th century. The Chamber Orchestra bearing the name of the city in the Lower Austria, exists since 1973. From the very beginning it has been intensively collaborating with the local music school. Many famous professional musicians came out of the Waidhofen Orchestra, including the former concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic, Rainer Küchl. The list of former members includes a number of prominent soloists, such as Stefan Vladar, Christopher Hinterhuber, Paul Gulda, Tamás Varga, Ludwig Streicher, Ernst Ottensamer and others.

The orchestra’s repertoire is very wide and covers various musical styles and forms, from concerts to symphonies, film music and works by contemporary composers. The orchestra has also performed numerous oratories and masses in collaboration with the Cantores Dei Allhartsberg Choir. Every two years the orchestra gives a special New Year’s concert in the classical style of Viennese New Year’s Concerts. In the international arena, it established itself with concert tours (Austria, Italy, Germany, Croatia, China, Iran, Madeira etc.).

Wolfgang Sobotka was born in 1956 in Waidhofen along the Ybbs River. After studying history at the University of Vienna, he completed a violoncello and musical pedagogy studies at the University for music and performing arts in Vienna. He studied conducting at Bruckner’s Conservatory in Linz. Since 2017, he has been the President of the Austrian Parliament, but he is still active as a conductor of the Waidhofen Chamber Orchestra.
