International symposium: IN NEW DISGUISE: FOLK MUSIC AND DANCE REVIVAL MOVEMENTS

The symposium In New Disguise: Folk music and dance revival movements will present insights into revival movements that have affinities in many spaces around the world. Taking into account historical facts, it will shed light on the causes and diverse manifestations of the movement in the field of music and dance practices that draw on tradition. Among other things, he will present how and why predominantly urban groups of musicians and dancers have sought inspiration for music and dance recreations in rural cultures, what phenomena have developed out of this, how ideas of authenticity and heritage have been established through their presentations, and how revivalist movements have been a reflection of different political situations and systems.

The symposium is the result of a bilateral research project in collaboration between Slovenian and Hungarian revival movement researchers, which aims to gain a comprehensive insight into the different transformations of (post)traditional music and dance practices, both in terms of the presentations of these practices on stage and in different mediums, as well as in terms of everyday and spontaneous – vernacular – forms of music-making and dancing.
