The Berlin-based Trio Tempestoso, formed in 2017, have won the distignuished 2022 Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Foundation Contemporary Music Performers Award for their interpretations of contemporary music, deemed a “unique musical experience.” The trio quickly gained their reputation as the winners of the 2019 Boris Pergamenschikow Award in Berlin. The jury of one of the largest and most prestigious competitions for contemporary music, held every three years under the honorary patronage of Tatjana Pergamenščikov and Sir András Schiff, pointed out the “high-level instrumental interpretation” and wrote that the musicians “with their exciting performance combine the musical tradition with the spirit of the present and indicate the direction of the future”. The members of the trio are young Slovenian musicians: accordionist Sanja Mlinarič, clarinettist Andraž Golob and cellist Urban Megušar – all of them former students at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, now studying chamber music with Martin Spangenberg at the University of Music Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Since their formation, the trio has worked with Janne Rättyä, Gerald Pachinger, Julian Arp, and Martin Rainer. Their repertoire consists of original compositions, written for this unique combination of instruments and defined by a seemingly orchestral sound of the ensemble. The young musicians have been performing in concert halls throughout Europe, with their performances recently having been broadcast by Radio Ö1.
The new solo bass clarinettist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Andraž Golob, studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, first with Bertram Eggru and then with Gerald Pachinger. Andraž is a winner of many competitions as a soloist and chamber musician: Val Tidone, TEMSIG, Luigi Zanuccolli. He regularly records for the Austrian Radio and Television ORF. Andraž also collaborates with professional and youth orchestras such as Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, Nürnbeg Symphonic Orchestra, and Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. In September 2019, after successfully auditioning, he became an academician at the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2018, he performed as a soloist at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, where he performed Mozart’s Clarinet and Orchestra Concerto with the North German Philharmonic Orchestra from Rostock. He has been honing his skills in masterclasses with artists such as Mathias Schorn, Andreas Schablas, Johann Hindler, Mate Bekavac, Kilian Herold, Harri Mäkki, and many others.
Urban Megušar studied cello with Karmen Pečar Koritnik at the Conservatory for Music and Ballet in Ljubljana. He graduated with honours from University for Music and Performing Arts in Graz in the class of Julian Arp. He has attended masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Giovanni Gnocchi, Jan Erik-Gustaffson, Martin Ostertag, and Maja Bogdanovič. Beside classical music, Urban is deeply interested in jazz and improvisation and has been active in that field with artists such as Max Grosch, Christian Howes, Axel Dörner, Joelle Leandre and Dre Hočevar. In recent years, he has started working on music for theatre and collaborating with the theatre group Divadlo Continuo in the Czech Republic.
Sanja Mlinarič combines her love for an authentic expression with the numerous sound possibilities of chamber music playing. It is this fascination that gave her the idea of founding a trio, which is now known as Trio Tempestoso. As a soloist and chamber musician, Sanja is a prize winner of various classical music competitions in Slovenia, Italy and Germany. In 2019 she won the Boris Pergamenschikow Preis with Trio Tempestoso – they are the first such chamber music group (also the first group with accordion) to win the competition. Sanja is furthermore the absolute winner and a recipient of Anguissola Scotti Special Performance Prize at the Val Tidone Competition in Italy 2019. She has been performing at festivals such as Festival Ljubljana (Slovenia), Unerhörte Musik (Germany), Du Vert á L’infini (France), Nei Suoni dei Luoghi (Italy), working closely with Imago Sloveniae and Jeunesses Musicales and recording for Austrian Radio Ö1 and Radio Slovenia. Sanja studied at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Graz with Janne Rättyä.
